On September 8, nonagenarian
Max The Saxman Lucas, who grew up and began
playing the saxophone in Washington, DC in the 1920s, discussed
playing with an incredible array of jazz titans: Louis Armstrong,
Chick Webb and Ella Fitzgerald, Hot Lips Page,
Buddy Johnson, Cootie Williams, Tiny Bradshaw (in Japan),
Thelonious Monk (at the Yam Inn), Billie Holiday and Dinah
Washington. In more recent decades he performed with Latin
groups led by Robert Vasquez and Carlos Barbario as well
as the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the leadership of
Mercer Ellington.
