The previous Harlem Speaks honoree was Jazz
Museum in Harlem board member Dr. Billy Taylor, who, on June
2nd, gave a fascinating talk about his experiences and work
in Harlem over the past 60 years. A sample: on Taylors
very first night in Harlem, he sat in at a club, and within
hours was in the middle of a piano jam at Harlem Stride Piano
King James. P. Johnsons house, where Willie the
Lion Smith and Thelonious Monk were also attendance.
Detailed stories followed about many of Taylors significant
experiences, including his first gig in NYC with Ben Websters
band, his experiences with Duke Ellington, Taylors stint
as musical director for The David Frost Show, the creation
of Jazzmobile and his legendary disc-jockey stint on WLIB.
